Resonance | Answer July - Community Night! at NOHspace

Community Night - General Admission $20, Students and  Working Artists $15

ABOUT Resonance | Answer July

Resonance, a combination dance performance and concert piece, pairs Orihara -- a principal dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company -- with renowned jazz pianist Senri Oe. Together, they'll share exciting new works inspired by the timeless stories and themes of dance masters like Graham, Isadora Duncan and Jose Limón, set to the sounds of Chopin, Mendelssohn and more. For the second act, Oe will present a solo jazz piano concert. Selections will include sneak peeks of tracks from his newest album entitled Answer July, a poetic whimsical jazz view of the world, which is slated to release in July of 2016.

The Japanese expression "onko chishin" refers to an attempt to discover new things by studying the past. In keeping with that sentiment, Miki Orihara's Resonance sets out to explore connections between the worlds of modern and contemporary dance.

“I’m deeply interested in the continuity and lineage between modern and contemporary dance… My intimate knowledge of classic modern dances informs my view of the contemporary, and my contemporary explorations shines new light on my understanding and interpretation of past masters.”

- Miki Orihara

Press Quotes from Resonance at La Mama in May 2014

“Orihara…enters the character, the movement, and the moment in time so completely and without artifice that she seems to be creating and embodying something, not just representing it.”

- Deborah Jowitt on bodies in motion - ArtsJournal, DanceBeat,

“What transpired was something that transcended the music, steps, and imagery, for we experienced - at close range - a dancer moving in a state of grace, communicating with every fibre of her body and spirit. It was in fact one of those rare evenings of dance where daily concerns and world-weariness were swept away by the purity of dedication of a great dancer, lifting us to a higher sphere. Miki seemed to reach the very heart of dance.”

- Oberon’s Grove

At this performance, you’ll be treated to Senri Oe’s original works as well as a sneak peek of Oe’s newest album, which will be officially released on July 5th, 2016.  “Answer July” presents a very poetic whimsical jazz view of the world and includes tracks with incredible lyricist Jon Hendricks.  This is his first jazz album to include collaborations with singers Sheila Jordan, Lauren Kinhan (New York Voices), Becca Stevens and Theo Blackmann.
