WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A DEMON COMES TO TOWN?
The citizens of a tiny beachside community find out in this wickedly funny play that explores the human tendency to allow preconceived notions to override our capacity for reason.
WELCOME TO THE LAND BEYOND THE SEA.
Theatre of Yugen proudly presents The Red Demon, a modern drama by one of Japan’s most acclaimed playwrights, Noda Hideki.
The Red Demon follows the tale of a mysterious stranger who is instantly labeled a demon when he washes up on the shores of a small beach town following a violent storm. Unable to communicate with the wary members of the close-knit community due to a language barrier, he struggles to face life as a persecuted pariah while maintaining his own identity. The Red Demon made its English debut at London’s Young Vic theatre where it was declared “a physical spectacle” and “elegantly expressive” by The Guardian. With a stylized approach that takes audiences on a wild ride from the height of slapstick to the essence of Grecian tragedy, The Red Demon lays bare the conflicts that arise when humanity must confront its instinctive fear of the alien. Theatre of Yugen has assembled a multi-lingual cast for the production, which will be directed by Theatre of Yugen Artistic Director Nick Ishimaru.
