Our Mission:

Theatre of Yugen risks blending multisensory experiences designed and realized for all.

  • We foster intercultural understanding through a shared experience of yugen that can be evoked by a plethora of performance modes.

  • We continue the evolution of live performance through presentation and collaboration.

  • We recognize the importance of yugen in the traditions of Noh and Kyogen and engage in rigorous physical training to maintain authentic representation.

  • We strive to keep theatre accessible for future generations by providing access to unique theatrical traditions and to education about global performing arts.

Theatre of Yugen was founded in 1978 in San Francisco, and is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Member Role and Responsibilities

Position

The Board Members will support the work of Theatre of Yugen and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Yugen’s Artistic Director, the Board-Artistic Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

  • Leadership, Governance and Oversight

  • Approving Yugen’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Serving as trusted advisor for the development and implementation of Yugen’s Strategic Plan and programming direction

  • Serving on committees and taking on special assignments

  • Identifying and recruiting other Board Members; ensuring Yugen’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities it serves

  • Fundraising

  • Considering Theatre of Yugen a philanthropic priority and making annual gifts that reflect that priority

  • Responsibility to meet minimum annual financial contribution of $2,000.

  • Assist and enable sustainable program funding and relationship development with foundations, organizations, and individuals

  • Audience Development and Community Outreach

  • Representing Yugen to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization

  • Work to develop and access new audiences, communities, and groups to further Yugen’s mission

  • Building cross-organizational connections, to enable joint work, collaboration opportunities, and growth of performing arts community support

Yugen welcomes and values direct board support of programming execution with their time and expertise as appropriate.

Board Terms / Participation

Yugen’s Board Members will serve a one-year term and will continue to be eligible for re-appointment to additional terms on an annual basis.  Board meetings will be held quarterly, with committee meetings and special event planning meetings held in coordination with full board meetings.

Qualifications

Yugen’s board extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Yugen’s mission, and continuing to develop on it’s 40 year history.  Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector

  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for supporting performing arts in San Francisco

  • A passion for building and connecting to communities across the Bay Area

Service on Theatre of Yugen Board of Directors is without remuneration.
