Winter
Training Session
with Jubilith
Moore

January 22 - March 1, 2008
Jubilith
is one of the most giving, insightful and fun instructors with whom
I've had the pleasure of working - and I ain't just sayin' that to say
it, she rocks.
Sofia Amad
I have
a defined place of focus and calm now that didn't exist before. It did
wonders for my voice as well. I resonate deeper and feel more control
vocally. Nathan Holguin
(Currently clowning w/Ringling Bros.)
I learned
a great deal in just a few weeks. It was a time where I could grow as
a person and an artist. I look forward to taking the course again next
year.

January 22 - March 1, 2008
Theatre of Yugen's fifth annual Winter
Training Session is a six week semi-intensive (three days a week),
performance-based training in the dance (komai/shimai) and chant (kouta/utai)
of the classical Japanese forms of Kyogen and Noh. Sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9pm and Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9 - 12pm. Students will learn a number of short dances and songs from Kyogen and Noh plays and will focus on one such piece for the final recital for an invited public. Students are encouraged to participate in all weekly sessions, but it is possible to participate in only one or two per week.
Meticulous body and verbal articulation as well as a tremendous amount of concentration and focus characterize the performer’s work. As such, dance and chant are both a delightful and effective way to develop the performer's voice and body.
Kyogen
With satirical humor, Kyogen addresses such worldly concerns as greed, vanity and the pleasures of outwitting someone. These short comedies are cast with stock characters of servants and masters, wives and husbands, and feuding Buddhist priests. Choreographed movement complements stylized voice flavored with sprinklings of old Japanese language.
Noh
Noh is a highly refined, richly symbolic and beautifully stylized dance-drama written in lyric poetry. It is tragic theater, deeply philosophical and concerned with man's spiritual beliefs and moral codes. Theatrical elements include a simple, elegant setting, elaborate costumes, two-three main characters, a chorus and a musical ensemble of three drummers and flutist.
